Day 4 of my trip to Canada!
Today my family and I visited the American side of Niagara Falls at Niagara Falls State Park. We even got the chance to be up close and personal with the American Falls. It was an insane experience that I am so grateful for. We viewed the falls from above via an Observation Tower and from below.
After walking for a bit, we got hungry and decided to stop for some lunch. We walked back out of the park where there are plenty of food stands and carts lining the streets. I decided to order a lamb gyro and mango lassi. The gyro was absolutely delicious. At first it looked a little small to me compared to the ones served at a local Mediterranean restaurant near home. However, it filled me up quite a bit and I wasn’t hungry for a long while after, even with all the walking we were doing. The meat was extremely tender and well seasoned. The sauce inside added even more flavor and was dripping from the wrap with every bite. The gyro tasted very savory, so the mango lassi was the prefect contrast. It was sweet and creamy.
Once we’d been reenergized by food, we continued walking around Niagara Falls State Park. We took the scenic trolley to see all the views without having to walk to them—the park is bigger than you’d initially think! Afterwards, we visited the Butterfly Conservatory, which was amazing! Then we started on the drive home. I was craving something sweet, so we stopped to get a dessert for later at a stand called BeaverTails. When previously walking in Toronto, we’d seen these food trucks all over the place serving pastries. I ordered the “Brwownie” BeaverTail with no idea what to expect. When the attendant handed me the pastry, I gaped at how huge it was. This thing was insane.
A BeaverTail is essentially a slab of fried dough stretched out in the shape of a beaver tail topped with whatever toppings you like. Mine had copious amounts of chocolate hazelnut spread, brownie and cookie pieces, and white chocolate. It tasted gooey and warm and delicious. Absolutely mouthwatering. I couldn’t eat the whole thing because it was so sweet that it would’ve made me sick. The dough is crispy on the outside with a nice crunch and more chewy on the inside. If this pastry wasn’t from Canada I would say it’s so American. I can imagine eating something like this in the U.S. at a state fair or carnival, and I’m actually disappointed we don’t have these because I liked it much better than funnel cake with all the toppings.
We returned to the Airbnb later and had a homemade dinner, and I managed to finish my BeaverTail later on. And that was day 4 of my eating adventures in Canada!
