For me, and I’m sure for many other Floridians within driving distance, Disney Springs is a lovely spot for a day trip. Disney Springs has so much unbelievably delicious food that it’s definitely worth the drive just to walk around, window shop, and eat! This is what I do every time I’ve been there, and even though I’ve been quite a few times over the years, there’s always a great new restaurant to try. Though it’s been there for a few years now, I haven’t gotten the chance to try The Polite Pig until my most recent visit!
The Polite Pig is a quick counter-service spot that serves barbecue, smoked meats, and even cocktails on tap. Don’t underestimate the quick service label here, though. Their food is very high quality and so flavorful! The fact that it’s constantly jam-packed inside should tell you as much. Though you may not find a table immediately, the staff are so kind and helpful, and they cleaned one off for us as soon as we asked.
For our meal, we ordered the Hop Salt Pretzel as an appetizer to split. It’s a giant soft pretzel with ipa mustard dip. This pretzel was so satisfying, I had to slow down before I ate my sandwich. It’s huge and well-salted; it’s not too plain and not over-salted either. It was just right! The outside of the pretzel was perfectly brown, shiny, and smooth, but it wasn’t greasy. Pulling it apart was easy since it was so soft, and it was satisfying to watch the dough pull. It feels like a warm pillow of dough in your mouth. It was thick but not too chewy, either.
For my main, I got the Southern Pig sandwich. This comes with pulled pork, fennel-apple slaw, tangy mustard bbq, and duke’s mayo. The sandwich is loaded with stuff, and the bottom was sopping wet with all the sauces and weight of the meat. It started to fall apart quite quickly, but I didn’t mind because it tasted fantastic! The meat has a rich umami flavor and is a little smoky. The two sauces completely drenched the sandwich, making every bite very flavorful—a pleasant combination of tangy, creamy, and savory flavors. The fennel-apple slaw was an awesome touch because it adds a fruity sweetness to the sandwich that makes it feel like you’re eating a more balanced meal. Whether or not that’s actually true, the tartness of the apple made for a wonderful combination with the savoriness of the meat.
Overall, I would gladly return to the Polite Pig to try one of the many other items on their menu. Stick around for the next post to see what I ate for dessert at Disney Springs!
