Canada Trip Day 3: Skylon Tower

Day 3 of my trip to Canada!

Today, we only ate out once because it was going to be possibly the most expensive meal of our lives. My family and I went to Niagara Falls on the Canadian side. We got to ride a Niagara City Cruise close-up to the Falls, we wandered around Clifton Hill and marveled at how kitschy it was, and we walked through the botanical gardens. Finally, we went to the Skylon Tower for our dinner reservation! The Skylon Tower is a huge tower in Niagara that overlooks the Falls. It has a restaurant inside at the top that slowly rotates, making one full rotation in an hour. We were lucky enough to see the Falls twice during our meal. The view is absolutely incredible, and that’s why the food is so expensive—you’re paying for the view. And it is worth it! We got to see the Falls from multiple different angles—Horseshoe, Bridal Veil, and American. We also got views of the entire city and gorge beyond. I could barely pay attention to my food because I constantly wanted to stare out the window. But never mind that—back to the meal.

I ordered the grilled salmon filet served with “seven grain rice blend and Soya Beurre Blanc.” It was much bigger than I expected, so I was relieved. It was really moist and flavorful, though I would still say my dad can make salmon just as good if not better (his salmon is truly the best). The sauce tasted rich, creamy, and buttery. It got absorbed through every layer of the fish, which tasted amazing. The rice and veggie paired nicely with it, but wish I got more than a single stalk of broccoli. The rice with grains served as a nice, more bland contrast to the flavorful fish.

After the meal, we ordered a slice of cheesecake to share. It was also fantastic. It reminded me of an Almond Joy candy but as a cake! It had a thin cookie-like layer on the bottom, then a chocolate cheesecake layer, and a coconut layer with pecans inside on top. The cheesecake was also rich and moist. The coconut layer was so thick it got separated from the rest of the cake at some point, and it was a little difficult to dig into with our forks, but it tasted delicious. What made it a little hard were the crunchy pecans inside. Garnishing the cake were drizzles of chocolate and caramel syrup and a small assortment of berries on the side. These elements gave the cake even more diverse flavors. Even though I shared it, by the end I was full. I went into the Skylon restaurant with low expectations, guessing the views would probably have to compensate for mediocre food, but it was very satisfying.

And that was day 3 of my eating adventures in Canada!
